Aiko takes a seat in the teacher's lounge on one of the couches, a cup of kave balanced on the armrest while she looks over a journal article discussing a new advancement in forensic technology, enjoying the quiet of the lounge while she expands her understanding of her areas of expertise. She glances up from time to time, to see if any other teachers are in the mood to take advantage of this quiet space to recover from the first day of dealing with classes.

Utaku Genji came in from the stables, having just made sure the animals were properly fed and their bedding ready for the evening. As such he's still wearing his heavy leather gloves, rubber boots and overalls atop his normal clothing. Everything was clean, he made sure of it before daring to enter the school dressed like this, but the sweat still beaded upon his forehead. Recognizing one of the few teachers to not be new this year in the rash of retirements and reassignments from last year's flock, the Utaku takes off a glove then extends his hand to the Mirumoto woman.
"Mirumoto Aiko-san. Good to see you're still here! How is the semester treating you and your honored husband so far?"

The Dragon nods to Genji, "Greetings, Utaku Genji-san. So far, it's been...interesting. I was teaching students who had never held a blade before how to use one earlier, and then I asked a group of local magistrates to assist me by having them pretend to be criminals for the sake of a lesson in interrogation. Also, I had a wonderful chat with a student earlier that is leaving me wondering about our new Bushido teacher. Oh. And Dairu isn't teaching today, as apparently, one of the kilns had a rather nasty crack and he's spending the day fixing it."

"Again? I swear, for one of the best schools in Rokugan our maintenance crew hasn't been that great the last few years. I've had to do my own repairs on the stables more than a few times just to make sure the horses don't get out. If Umeko-chan ever found one of them in her greenhouses, I'd never hear the end of it."

"Mmm. Well, in fairness, this time it was because my esteemed husband accidentally left the kiln on too high for too long and a couple of the bricks gave out. It also ruined the tea set he was making for one of my cousin's swarm of children to celebrate their gempuku. He felt responsible for the damage, so he's taking care of it," Aiko replies, smiling faintly, her husbands occasional bouts of absent mindedness despite his otherwise impeccable memory well known to the faculty, "And Umeko-chan, Genji-san? Did something happen between you two I wasn't aware of?"

"Ah, I remember you telling me about this cousin before. Rather large family, hai? Even adopted a bunch of kids? How are they all doing, by the way?"
Before he can get onto the topic of her own husband's absentmindedness, the question comes and the Unicorn pauses in his tracks before he can get a bottle of water out of the fridge. "Ah.. nothing of note, Aiko-san," comes the reply. He then turns around, asking, "Did I really just call her -chan just now?"

"Fairly well. One of the daughters is even attending RHS this year. And, yes, you did just call her chan," Aiko confirms.

"Isn't one of your own daughters also attending this year? Sakura, wasn't it?" Clearly someone was avoiding the topic... but then the Unicorn puts his hand to his face in embarrassment while walking over to join the Dragon sensei with his water.
"May I ask you something, Aiko-san?"

"Ask away. Whether or not I answer is another question."

He chuckles a bit then nods. Thankfully no other teachers were present, and the Dragon Thunder's penchant for romance was well known, so asking her now would mean less shame on his part. "How... how long have I been interested in her? Why did it take a Scorpion sensei who's first day was today and watching another sensei flirt with her to realize how I feel?"
