Maybe he understood. Maybe he misunderstood. Either way Genji just nods, his own smile sad as he looked upon Umeko. He bows slightly apologetically, offering, "Before this afternoon? Neither did I. I..."
A pause.
"I'm sorry," comes a contrite reply, Genji clearly thinking he's done something wrong with his actions. "I shouldn't have done that. I wanted you to know how I felt... so that you at least knew you had one more option if you wished it."

"No! Please, don't apologize. I am honored, and glad to know... If anything it should be I that apologize for my lack of answers and uncertainties in the matter." She sighs softly, glancing down at the ground. "Honestly, I never even considered I might be able to marry someone that loved me. I was resigned to the fact that for the sake of my plan, I would need to find an husband that would be able to help rebuild my family, probably a prime and proper courtier, like Asahina-sama. I figured I would have to get the short hand of a deal, since I have so little to offer."
Her eyes flickered toward the nearby dorms. "I know I am not beautiful. I don't have a name, and no money. All I have as value is an insane plan that means my husband could potentially find himself leading a renewed clan..." Brown eyes found his again. "If it weren't for it... I would be happy to accept your feelings." She admitted sadly.

"Anyone who says you aren't beautiful is either blind or lying," comes the very contrary, but also equally honest Utaku! He almost raised his voice at that one, only remembering at the last moment just where they were and what the hour was and he didn't want to bring that level of attention to them. To her.
His hand left hers, but only so he could rest it on her cheek as their eyes met again, taking in all of it with a bit of sadness on his face. "Umeko-chan," Genji offered softly, smiling through whatever pain he might be experiencing at her response. "If I cared about you having a name or assets, I wouldn't have kissed you just now. I'd do it again, right now, if it weren't for how much I respect you and don't want to make this any harder on you that I just did."
The Utaku's thumb starts stroking her cheek slowly, smile remaining sad but his eyes shimmer with contentment. "As long as you're happy, that's all that's important."

She leaned into the touch, eyes half-closing. "I am honestly absolutely terrified..." She admitted with a soft laugh. "My experience with courting is almost nonexistent. Having spent most of my life as a soldier... a *ronin* soldier, my relationship experience consist mostly of single nights out. And while I would be happy to walk back with you to your room tonight, I believe I know you well enough to know that is not quite was you meant."

Genji blushed a little; it absolutely wasn't what he meant but...
"If it made you happy, Umeko-chan... only I'd still be there when you woke, fixing breakfast for us both."
He smiled back to her, the sadness in his eyes as he looked over her. "I know how you feel, though. I've never had a serious relationship and I'm honestly surprised the clan hasn't forced me to marry by now if only to do my Duty. And it scared me a bit to kiss you, because I had no clue how you'd react." The hand stroked her cheek some, "And I'd be lying if I said your reply didn't hurt some, but I do understand."
The Utaku moved as if to kiss her again, this time on the lips, but then stopped himself to prevent the moment from becoming awkward. "If I could put you in a position where you could achieve your goal and give you a love-filled life, I would move the Spine of the World Mountains to do so." A pause as he understood the reality of his position, smile growing sadder. "But I'm just a stable master who should have realized how I felt a year ago. I don't have Shibatsu-san's assets or Asahina-san's political prowess and connections."

She closed in the distance between them, her lips brushing against his in the lightest of touch. "Trust me, Genji, a man like you would be exactly what I would be looking for if it weren't for my goals." Umeko whispered, before backing slightly with a sad smile. "Perhaps a solution will present itself in time... But for now, I can offer you no promises. I truly am sorry."

He was caught off-guard by the kiss but returned it tenderly, eyes shining as some of the remorse for their situation washed away in that moment.
"Umeko-chan, I never asked for a promise. All I want is a chance and for you to find what it is you want." The Utaku brushed away a few strands of her hair with his free hand then tilted his head to the right as he looked down upon her. "Just remember that I'm always there for you, no matter what you need me for."

The kiss might not have been the best idea... It was so much harder to pull away from his gentle embrace now, and she had to struggle to regain her compose and not simply drag the man off to her room. Umeko swallowed and force herself to take a step back, chuckling quietly. "That's a dangerous thing to promise, Genji-san..."

He took his own step back to give Umeko the space she likely needed even if his hand remained on her cheek, "Maybe, Umeko-chan, but if I'm willing to sacrifice my honor, my name, and my career for my goals shouldn't I be willing to give up that and more for you?"
The way he answers makes it clear he wouldn't do anything stupid without weighing the consequences first, but then maybe he's already considered them and made up his mind.
