Rodrigo turned his attention to the fox and quirked his head.
"Wait, what is that? It can understand us?"

"It is a kitsune, or something similar to one," she answers, watching the fox spirit eat part of her lunch. "They can take human form, and may sometimes hide their tails or leave them visible."
As she glances at the fox, trying to find anything that might identify it, she recoils. She hadn't realized she was doing it. She keeps the horror of her past from her face, but a labored, shallow breath escapes anyway. She resumes control, hands far from the fox's tempting softness.
"I can't say for sure who this one is or why she is not in human form, though," she admits. "I only encountered three such spirits in my life. One was caustic but kind, one was friendly, and one…was unpleasant."
"When you finish, you should probably run along." Yes, keep her away from you.

"Huh."
Rodrigo leaned in, looking at the fox that was apparently a person.
"Why did you stop petting it? It seemed to be enjoying it."
These Rokugani were very strange about touching and being touched, maybe that was it. He held out a hand towards the fox, not trying to pet her but inviting her closer if she wished.

Reiha quickly nods as Hisui mentions her being a kitsune. Her look turns a little worried as the Utaki suddenly recoils and her smell turns... weird. Fear definitely, longing too perhaps?
And then she explains. Of course, she has bad experiences with her kind. And in all honestly, she shouldn't have let her sensei pet her. But the food had been distracting and all things told, she was good at it.
<Oh, I'm sorry, Utaku-sensei! I'm not one of the trickster kitsune! My family is loyal to Inari-no-kami!>
Which comes out as yips and barks obviously, though someone familiar with the fox-language might catch it is meant as comforting.
Being described as an 'it' by the gaijin she saw in the Dojo however does not go over well. Reiha might not have a high opinion of herself, but the Doji family name still commands her respect. A Doji is not an animal, not an 'it'. Furthermore, she was obviously a vixen, was she not? Which makes the use of the impersonal especially insulting! She sits well out of his reach (and by extension closer to Hisui) and gives him a haughty look.
<You, sir, should most certainly take etiquette lessons! That was quite boorish and entirely uncalled for!>
Still, now the bowl of kitsune udon was out of her reach as well..

Rodrigo looked at the kitsune, confused.
"Are you...talking?"

Reiha cocks her head, looking at the gaijin downright snootily. Being in fox-form and not being understood is actually... liberating. It makes her brave!
Another series of barks and yips follows.
<No, technically this is called 'gekking', but yes, I am obviously attempting to communicate!> She lowers her head, something between a nod and a bow. <Did you not listen to a thing Utaku-sensei said?>

Rodrigo sighed.
"I cannot understand what you are saying. I do not speak fox."

Hisui tries not to let the closeness cause her any further dread. She reassures herself, thinking that the fox was merely offended by what was said. Not that this one was drawn to her like all the other fox women she'd met.
"I stopped petting her because it might be taken as inappropriate once she resumes human form," she explains. "While all the fox women I've met have never complained, it is still possible."
She turns to the fox, head bowed. "My apologies for any offense. It will not happen again."
Then back to Rodrigo. "It's alright. Very few humans can understand them. We'd need to find another of her kind or a specialist to translate. But if all she wanted was some food and drink, she's welcome to mine until she feels the need to run off."
Breathe. It's not her. It's not her. It's not her.
"Ah, my number." She once again presents her contact info, this time in view of them both. "I'll help if I can. That's an open offer for both of you."

Rodrigo puts the number into his phone and nods.
"I will text you, that way you know what my number is as well. Thank you."
He leaned back in his chair, thinking.
"Oh, are you going to that party tonight? I saw the fliers, I think I may have to see what all the fuss is. Maybe that girl will be there."

"I do not believe I will. I have a woman I owe a lovely evening to," she answers. "But you should feel free to attend. Parties often let you see a more relaxed side to many samurai. It could be a good way for you to make friends."
"I'll see if I can meet Horiuchi-san before the party, see if she would be open to meeting you there."
