Mako looked at Aiko and... blinked, "Of... course." Her mother loved her! She was busy, but of course her mother loved her. That was obvious enough, "My mother isn't bad, or... without love. She's just... busy." She said it with a smile that was obviously not all there, but she wasn't gonna say otherwise, "...Why?"

"Because you are acting like the only way you can be with the person you love is romantically, rather than realizing that you may want a romantic relationship, but there are other ways for your love for this person to manifest, Otomo-san. To some degree, our friends are as much our family as those who are our blood," Aiko replies, "Which is why I am saying that you should stay involved, even if it isn't in the way you had hoped. Because love doesn't always have to be romantic love. After all, Jizo is not Benten and Benten is not Jizo. But they both stand for love."

"I..." She frowned, and shook her head, "I know I can love my friends. I'm friends with people who I don't have any attraction to. Any spark of that kind of love. But I still love them. This isn't that, and I don't know how to make it that. I dream about having a life together with her, of spending all our time together, of being a star, shining upon her." The pit in her chest distracted her from how she casually dropped the sexuality she had been trying to hide from the sensei, "Is it so easy to turn it from that to what I have with my friends? If it were, would I be in so much pain?"

Aiko leans forward, resting a hand on top of Mako's, trying to be reassuring, "Sometimes, we can't always be with the ones we want, Otomo-san. I have been in your position. It is not pleasant. But at the same time, it would hurt far worse if they weren't around at all. Because then there is this huge hole in your heart, shaped like that person. One that will sometimes sneak up on you at the most inopportune times and make your life worse. And...I assume you have known this person a while?"

She smiled slightly at the contact, not expecting it from a non-Unicorn, but... happier with it, even as it reminded her of Hisui's comforting nature, "Of course... years. Since... well, long before I came here." She said it with this little smile, that concealed so much, and yet concealed none of it, "It wouldn't hurt so much if it was recent, but it's been building, and growing, and for some reason, I never expected this."

"Then let me put it to you this way. If she has been your friend for so long, why do you think she will stop being your friend because she has a girlfriend? Why do you think any time you spend around the two of them will be out of pity?" Aiko asks, "Cutting them out of your life will hurt them as much as it hurts you to do so. In the short term, if she is aware of your feelings, things may be awkward. But in the long run, wouldn't you say that your friend is worth remaining friends with?"

"Hai... hai." She said it slowly, and frowned, "I... suppose you're right. But... should I keep lying, and saying it's nothing?" She bit her lip, "I mean, I can, I don't mind hiding it." A deep, meditative breath, as she closed her eyes, and tried to not be too upset at the idea, "Or... should I tell her? And... let her know, at least?"

Aiko looks at Mako, "...I...cannot give you an answer for that. In my own case, I hesitated, as there were other factors at the time that made it ill-advised to tell him. But in yours, I am not certain. Honesty may be the best course, explaining why you have been so out of it lately, which may give this person the context she needs to understand and support you as a friend, but at the same time, the friend may also react badly to the news. Do you know your friend's new girlfriend well?"

"I... no. I only met her the day before school began, so only a few days..." She frowned, hesitated, "I don't know if she would be mad, if I said everything, I... I want to think she wouldn't, but..." Fuyuko wouldn't be mad, if she sat Hisui down and talked to her, but... would she be mad if she told Hisui everything, about how deep those feelings are? It was a scary thought.

Aiko looks at the young woman, then gently, "Would you like me to be there, then? Perhaps having a sensei there would help keep things calm."
