Kobushi keeps quiet. The detail kind of bothered him too, but he thought it better to wait until Nadeshiko told the full story before he said anything.

"Sorry, I've been thinking of how to talk about this for a day or two and I flubbed it a bit. The man was the father."
She paused on a step and took in a deep breath, trying to calm her mind, trying to meditate for a brief moment to keep herself from messing up again.

"Hey, it's alright," the Crane says. This was clearly of great importance to Nadeshiko. "Take your time. We're here for you."

Nadeshiko continued to move up the stairs, talking once more as she went.
"The police were not very happy to have me consult on the case, especially when it came out who I really was because I had to physically come into the station. The family I was working for however were very wealthy and very powerful where they lived. They had the clout to ask the magistrates to grant me leeway in the matter."
Thankfully the stairs were not too tall and it wasn't long before she was standing in front of the old-fashioned shrine at the top.
"I got access to all the evidence in the case and everything the police had that they didn't tell the press. I spent 6 hours pouring over all of it."
She takes a moment to remove everything from the bucket then before holding it up for Kobushi "Kobushi-kun, could you please fill this with water" she motions to an old fashioned hand pump nearby.

"Sure."
He grabs the bucket and starts pumping. He hasn't seen one of those in a while, but he has little trouble getting it going.

Hinata said nothing as she listened to the story. She did not want to interrupt her friend as she told it, though it was clear she was listening intently from the concerned look she kept fixed on Nadeshiko.

Since Kobushi is now busy, Yoshi looks briefly to Hinata with a look of concern. Given where they were, his logical mind has already deduced that this story does not end well, and he imagines at least the Kuni woman has reached a similar conclusion. Still, all he can do is continue to listen politely as Nadeshiko shares the rest.

Nade waited for Kobushi to return before continuing to walk, moving towards the shrine first.
"I even fell asleep in the middle of it all and had a dream. I can't really explain any of it, it was all very weird but it gave me a spark of what I needed to know. I awoke swiftly and started to go through all the evidence once more until I found a picture the kidnappars had sent as proof of life. They had messed up, one of the blinds was broken just enough to show the window of the house behind."
She headed over to the Temizuya (water pavillion) then. With her right hand she picked up the ladle and filled it with water to fulfill the ritual cleansing. With her right hand she poured some water over her left. The ladle was shifted then and more was poured over her right hand. With her hands cleansed she poured some in one hand to bring to her mouth to rinse out. Finally she tips the ladle to rise it off, leaving the wooden scoop where she found it before stepping back to allow her friends to do the same thing.

Kobushi follows the old ritual, listening to Nadeshiko's story as he does. He can guess that the story does not have a happy end. He can guess that the story has some sort of personal importance to the Unicorn. So he remains silent, out of respect for both the dead and the living.

Looking away from Hinata, though no less concerned, Yoshi moves to follow the same cleansing ritual, as quietly and solemnly as Kobushi before him.
