Hoshiko winced. "I can't imagine what that must have been like. I think if I injured my arm, I'd still try to play. I'd push myself to be able to play, like she pushed herself. It sounds crazy...but when it's your life, what else can you do?"
She smiled though.
"Her story had a really happy ending though. Even if she had to marry a Kuni."

"Wait until the injury heals and not risk losing it for good," Hisui points out. "And her husband isn't so bad. A little strange, but Toroda-san is a good man. Deep down. And a loving husband, from what she tells me. In his own way."

"That's easy to say when you're not the one losing your passion to injury, Utaku-sensei" Hoshiko shook her head "and really...a great woman, a brilliant talent...residing in the Kuni of all families. It's a tragedy!"

That stung a little, the comment. She'd lost her passion too, once upon a time. But she chooses not to speak of it. Artisans and military tacticians rarely saw eye to eye. And besides, she rekindled an old one in the process of recovering from the war. The loss wasn't so bad.
"Don't let her hear you say that," she comments. "She's quite in love with her husband, last time I spoke to both of them. Though she's still clearly the more sociable one in the household."
"Doji-san, I feel I must apologize to you. For...an incident I think we both would rather not detail again."

The apology caught Hoshiko out. She hadn't expected it, nor who it was from.
"Ah...well...you don't need to. Really. I mean, it wasn't your fault, even if you are the sensei" she said, a little weakly.

"No, I should have been more careful." She sighs. "I'm surprised they didn't throw me out. I would have."

"Should have thrown the other girl out, not you" Hoshiko said with a shake of her head "I don't think you're a bad sensei. But, if you knew she had that ability..." she stopped herself, sighing "I had to tell a few students in that class afterwards that's not what music is about, because they thought it was. That's why I was angry."

"Well, whatever you were angry about, it was my fault. And for what it's worth, I appreciate what you did."
She adjusts her position, and then bows as formally as her injury and posture could allows. A little more so, given the wince of pain from her side.

Hoshi wasn't the most perceptive, but she noticed the wince.
"Are you ok, sensei?"

She straightens before she responds.
"It's nothing. Just an old wound from the war acting up," she answers. The truth, but not all of it. She'd gotten careless in her movements and that made the old pain flare up again. "Nothing to worry about."
