"Both, most likely. I know some of them, like Nadeshiko, want to continue their families and have kids, and it's not fair to keep them from their propriety and duty that they want to follow." She took another bite, as she thought of it - it's not like she didn't get a bit of sadness, imagining them marrying off, with families she would only tangentially be part of potentially. But she also was happy at the thought that she may be involved in their lives still.
"And I mean, I'm sure they would be lucky." She leaned against Hisui, as she mumbled the rest slightly under her breath, loud enough for Hisui to hear, "They'd be luckier to have you." She was all pouty, but she still loved her Sui-nee a ton.

"Those children will have their Aunt Mako to spoil them so much."
Marriage. She thought about what that must be like, for someone in Mako's position. She had been over her feelings for Aiko when the Dragon got married. She had been lucky to have been married to a gentleman she called friend. But she could not imagine either possibility for Mako. Her determined, unyielding Mako. It was for girls like her that Fuyuko hoped to change the law.
But in case that failed…what did she have in mind? "And you? Do you plan to get married if Duty presses that on you?"
She accepts the lean, the soft weight. The little Otomo was no burden, after all. It put a smile on Hisui's face to hear the words, even if she didn't agree with the later half. She wonders if they'd remain this close the day Mako moved on from her feelings for the old Utaku.
"Not everyone can. I'm not like you. I'm a selfish old woman who doesn't want to be shared."

"Not without a fight." Mako smiled, happy to declare her intentions, as she cut into her bloody piece of rare meat, and took another bite, licking her lips after she had swallowed it, "I'm sure I'll be able to weasel my way out of it for a few years past graduation at least. While I work to larger ends." A little wink, no shame in her admitting she will not do this Duty.
"I'd like to have kids. But I'd like them to be kids of someone I love. I know... someone, who uhm. Had some interesting things done, for them to be born. I uh. I'd like to use similar things myself. One day. Even if the Empire doesn't strictly approve of it yet..." A pause, and almost a whisper, "At least one for each person I love." The implication in that was left for Hisui to figure out.

There is no shame from Mako, and surprisingly, no judgment from Hisui. She had considered that herself, once upon a time. She was a Battle Maiden, and being in the front most of the time made it difficult to arrange things like miai. It was an easy way to escape the need to wed. At least, until she was injured and a well-meaning Crane courtier wed her to a man that she would come to call a friend. The Unicorn smiles. "That's my Mako-chan. Never give up without a fight. If they have to marry you off, make them earn it."
She tilts her head at what Mako says next. She'd heard rumors such technology existed. She just didn't think of them as being remotely true. It makes her wonder and dream, but then Mako's other statement brings her back down to earth. "Be careful going down that path, Mako-chan. But if anyone can change the law, it's you. As for..." She pauses, unsure if she wants to even address this topic. But eventually, she does. "That is a lot of children. One...one of them will be mine, is that what you're saying?"

Mako blushed, as the secret intention was made plain, and she nodded slowly, "I mean. If you'd be willing. I would never like, steal your blood and have a secret baby of yours!" She sort of laughed at the idea, but it was awkward. This whole conversation was awkward. Wow why did she even tell Hisui her intentions already, "I love you, very much. And I want to give you even more of a family. And... part of it is out of selfishness." She admitted it without any cajoling, "Because I'd like to have a part of you in my life, far beyond when you..." Heavy topics that made her awkwardness give way to some sadness.
"I... I mean, it wouldn't be for years!" She was loud, as she waved it off and tried to awkwardly laugh off the topic, "I'm sure we could discuss this when I'm like. You know. Twenty four or five or something. And ready to have kids."

She listens, from the joke to the clarification. Her face shifts in reaction at the stages of Mako's explanation.
First there's the confusion at the blush and plain confirmation. Then there's the horror at the idea of having a child in secret, unknown to her and hidden from her. The laugh made that go away, but the awkwardness was still there. The declaration of love hit then, and the uncertainty doubled. From there, Mako's mentioning of more motivations, of more reasons for this, left her stunned.
On some level, she knew she should feel flattered. Yet, at the same time, she worries about what this would mean. Thoughts and questions run through her mind. Would Mako let her be a part of this child's life? How would Fuyuko feel about this? Was she to be this child's grandmother, a second mother, or something else? How did Hisui herself truly feel about this? Would Mako be safe undergoing whatever this procedure was? Could her curse be passed on this way? How would her biological children feel? But perhaps loudest of all was one question.
Why choose me?
"Yes, yes. That's...probably best," she answers, taking the offer of a later conversation on the matter. "But I want you to know, if you ask for permission to use my blood to...to give yourself a child, I can't make that decision alone. I need to ask...well, family."

"I don't expect you to tell me that you're okay with it, without thinking it through at all. Or consulting the rest of your family." She was smiling, a hand still on Hisui's knee, a closness still held, "I didn't mean to ask you right now, I was planning to ask, you know, in a few years. When it might be something happening sooner." A little laugh into her hand, uncomfortable but doing her best to be happy about it anyways, "OOpsies."
She continued though, after a short tiny laugh, "Though... if you think it would hurt Fuyuko, I... don't want that. I know she wanted a child of her own, and... I don't know if that has abated at all."

"Our family," she corrects gently.
The closeness isn't pushed away, nor is it made awkward. She still lets that hand rest where it does, as the Utaku takes a bite of food. She lets her mind process the thought a little more, but without the hurrying and rushing of before. She has time to think it through, consider all the implications.
"And it's alright. This...this gives me a little more time, you know? Think on it. Consider the details." She smiles as she hears that little laugh, the little oops. Then the next words come, and Hisui holds in some concern. "She still does. Having a family matters to her. It's why she's adopting. It's why she's so nervous about the twins liking her. And it's why she's so pleased that you see her as a parental figure."
Hisui ponders things again, using food to have an excuse to think. "She'd be happy to have a child truly her own. But I can't give her that."

"Our family." She said it with a smile.
"You'll have plenty of time to consider, yep. Seven, eight years at least. Maybe more, depending on if I decide to have someone else's children first. I know I want a large family, to surround myself in and dote on~" She was happy to discuss that much with Hisui, at least, "It's part of why I can... understand Yuko, a bit. I would be sad, if I couldn't dream about that." She liked the image in her head of having a large family, while doing important work and making sure her family was rich and affluent for it.
The final bit was something she had... considered, but she didn't approach it directly, "I want to be a better parent than my father allowed me to have. And I dunno. I just like the idea of it... a dedication to people I love. To care for, and hold in my heart as they grow into it all their own."

She kisses Mako. A little one, on the top of the head.
"A large family made up of children from your many lovers. And one from me, possibly. I'm trying to imagine it." The image puts a smile on her face. Mako with about two dozen children, many Hisui doesn't recognize. A few she does, like Akane's coppery hair or Priya's skin tone. She wonders how easy it'd be for a child with her DNA to get lost in the numbers. "I have no idea how you'd handle all of it, really."
She nods at the last. "It's touching, it really is. And I have no doubt you'll make a wonderful mother, once you've got a few years and wisdom to go with everything else," she says with a proud smile, like a mother watching her child become Topaz Champion. "But be mindful you don't hurt anyone pursuing it. Some might object to the idea."
