Some time after her return from a day at the beach, Kuni Hinata would have received a very cordial request from one Shosuro Saito to meet with him in his office before class the next day, if she was available. It was an invitation wholly unlike a teacher requiring a subordinate to report to him, and for all intents and purposes, seemed completely optional. However, confident that it would be accepted, the Scorpion sensei awaits the Kuni student seated comfortably behind his desk in his office.

It did not take Hinata long to arrive. Indeed, she was even more punctual than usual. She had a good guess as to what Saito wanted to discuss; after-all, why else would a teacher who had only met her once invite her to his office? She had no doubt it was going to be a discussion about politics. Still, to not show up would be seen as an insult. No matter how cordial the 'invitation' appeared, it was still an order if she did not want to give him ammunition.
She knocked on the door once she arrived, not wanting to be rude by simply throwing the door open.

"Please, come in," Saito tells her. When she enters, and he sees it's Hinata as expected, the Scorpion stands and bows to her. "Good morning, Kuni-san. How unfortunate we have not crossed paths before now, though I thank you for allowing me to rectify that oversight with haste. Might I offer you some tea?" There's a steaming pot and cups on the desk between them, their presence and enticing aroma giving his office a more welcoming atmosphere than it usually carried for a student entering to speak with a teacher.

Hinata bowed in return, though she had to fight to keep her eyes from wandering around the room. A fresh pot of tea, a cordial invitation...either he was trying way too hard to make this relaxing or he was trying to seduce her. ...or both. He was a Scorpion, probably both.
"We have met once before, actually; I was in your first chemistry class. And yes, some tea would be lovely."

"Ah... yes, well I tended to write off those who failed to return, especially the ones with an admitted death-wish," Saito tells her as he pours them both each a cup. It's a somewhat spicy morning blend, intended to perk one up for the coming day. "You've changed your look since then but thankfully not actually died. I should've been quite embarrassed had you needed intervention, but I did see to it that the Lion girl who burst into tears was taken care of, as she seemed the higher priority." He resumes his seat, taking a satisfying drink of the tea before continuing.

An amused smirk grew on Hinata's face.
"We are samurai, are we not born into a death wish?"
She then gestured to the chair.
"May I have a seat?"
She knew the answer would be 'yes', but it was always good to be polite.

"Oh, please, take whatever comfort you wish in addition to the tea, Kuni-san," Saito says, gesturing invitingly to the chair opposite him. With a chuckle, he asks, "Do you really think I'd stand and drink it?" He ponders her other question during a second sip of his own.
"Yes, as samurai we do not fear death and hope for a good one," he concedes, "but it seems a bit too brazen to simply want it without any further context. As the saying goes, don't go to battle intending to die for your lord, go intending to make the other samurai die for theirs." He gives Hinata a wide and friendly grin, though there is something wolfish about it, especially coupled with his previous statement.

"Thank you." Hinata took a seat and crossed her legs, keeping her back straight. She took another sip of the tea and closed her eyes, both to savor it and to give herself a moment to clear her head. She could not let herself get too relaxed, that was how the Scorpion operated. After a few moments she opened them, being careful not to look Saito in the eyes. No, that was a weapon to be used later. For now, things would remain cordial; she would not be the one to broach the topic. "Mm, quite. I suppose I simply misunderstood the question. You are right, though; one should never waste their life if they can continue to serve."

"Yes...," Saito says, nodding. "Though, regardless of initial misunderstanding, I suppose your perspective upon future service to the Empire has probably changed a great deal since then, has it not?" He arches an eyebrow but says nothing more, apparently feeling content to beat lazily around the bush in which the elephant in the room happened to be hiding.

Hinata nodded.
"Indeed. I think I would serve the Empire far greater if I were alive."
Okay, this was a bit annoying, but still. She was not going to be the one to open herself up for an attack; that was how courtiers worked. This one seemed especially dangerous.
