Yia was once again hosting an early class. This one in a regular classroom. The room was decorated simply, small candles on her desk that gave a faint light that she enjoyed, as she otherwise let only the natural light filter in, the lights for the classroom themselves off. The board simply read 'Diplomatic Truths.' The topic of the day was an important one - the art of not lying, but making the truth presentable without hurting others feelings. It was one of those skills that proved the difference between a Samurai who would be a danger for how open they were, and one who could be Honest without being discourteous.
Now she need only wait for students to trickle in.

Ichiro showed up to the class knowing he needed a better understanding of how to talk to people and make people believe what he says. It helped that the sexy dragon teacher was leading the class.
He enters the class and bows to the sensei "Good morning Togashi-sensei have you had rice? And may I say you look lovely this morning." He said the last as a simple compliment not brazen flirting.

Hinata certainly needed lessons in sincerity. She detested lying, yes, but sincerity was not just lying; it was being convincing. It did not matter how much you told he truth if you could not convince someone that is what you were doing. As such, as much as she hated how sincerity could be abused, it was still a vital skill to master.
This thought trailed off when she entered the room and saw who the teacher was, replaced by a feeling of cold animosity. At least the topic was appropriate; maybe she could learn to tell the teacher she hated her while remaining polite. Yia was still the teacher, though, so she had to show the proper respect. She gave the older woman a rigid bow.
"Sensei" she greeted, her voice full of ice.
She was trying to keep herself contained, but even her best On could not keep the cool hatred from reaching her eyes. Without another word, she went and took a seat.

"Akodo-san, I have been blessed by Inari." She gave a short bow as she gave the affirmation, smiling, "I hope you may say the same." She was smiling at the 'charming' compliment, but it did little except make her more worried for a date she had later, "Sit wherever you would like, of course. I'm sure your honeyed tongue will catch on quickly to these lessons." She motioned to the chairs, just in time for Hinata to walk in and catch her eye. The girl seemed actually happy, for once - at least compared to tea class.
And then she met Hinata's eyes, and those eyes she saw turned to ice quicker than a water Shugenja could call the simplest of spells. But Yia still smiled, "Kuni-san, it is always a pleasure to have you in my classes." She did her best to not let any skepticism at that animosity show on her face, "The morning treats you well, I hope."
Regardless of how the girl responded, Yia moved to the front, "While it's smaller than average, I trust I can begin now with a simple question. What does it mean, when I say that sincerity is being diplomatic about the truth. What is your first responses? As with the tea class, there will be no wrong answers to it." She was smiling happily.

Hinata was not sure she could tell the truth diplomatically here. This was a class, however, not an opportunity to antagonize the woman teaching it. With that in mind, Hinata decided to just answer the question.
"It is phrasing the truth in such a way that it does not offend other parties involved. Essentially, it is to be honest without being blunt."

Ichiro was still thinking when he heard Hinata's answer and it seemed like a pretty good one. "Yeah I guess what she said, you can like say the truth but in a way that like doesn't make people mad."
This was certainly not his wheel house and being in a smaller class than usual made him a little nervous.

"Ah, an excellent way of saying it, Kuni-san. But it can be more than that as well, of course." She smiled softly, as she moved towards the board, "At its core, speaking diplomatically is about changing how you are heard. This can be through phrasing indeed. But it can also be through your body language, your tone of voice, even traced through your interactions with others."
She wrote a sentence on the board - 'Bayusi-san, you are looking quite lovely tonight.'. And then she began to speak again, "Here, we will always use the same phrasing. I want you to say it three times to me, each of you. I want one to sound outright insulting, without any hidden intent. One where you hide your insult. And one where you seem to genuinely think she looks lovely." The Sensei was smiling as she gave the work to her class.

Hinata said all three, and did it reasonably well, but once she was done she spoke up again.
"Togashi-sensei, are not the first two a failure of honesty? If you did not think the Bayushi looked lovely, why would you tell her she is? Surely it would be best to simply not comment on it."

Bai had arrived to class well on time, and definitely not late because his player somehow overlooked this thread [OOC: bluh! Apologies!]. He sat quietly through the early part of the class, taking notes as he does. He has always had strong feelings on scincerity, so his notes were extra meticulous.
He gives his portion of the assignment promptly. For the first one, he turns it into both a question and an accusation. For the second, he says it in a way that expresses clear disappointment and confusion. For both of these two he has to stop himself from continuing on, as the instructions were specifically to use only that phrasing, but he is able to without too much effort. The last one is of course the simplest, most direct, which he was able to do perfectly.
"One does not need to think one is not beautiful to insult them. Indeed, often when you are trying to keep yourself from openly insulting another, it is best to focus the conversation on something you genuinely like about them. One may know a samurai to be a dishonorable failure and still find their appearance delightful, which can in itself be an insult."

Hinata nodded in agreement with Bai.
"Precisely, one does not need to lie to insult someone without being offensively direct. One can insult by omission. Though I must ask, why would you insult someone in the first place? Unless they were the one to start it."
