"How would I have even heard of it when it's just my first day?" he asks, looking very puzzled. The logistics of it all has him quite confused. "But I'm kind of glad I didn't. I'd hate to have run into you like this with a bad impression already. Seems...I don't know, disingenous somehow?"

"The rumor mill here works fast - you'll learn that before long." Ryuha's eyes dart around the dojo for a moment, trying to ferret out any potential rats or gossipers lurking in the various side rooms and shadows of the building.
"Yes, disingenuous is a work I would use to describe it. I rather detest some of the useless, lying games people play here." The complement went over the young girl's head for a moment. "Ah.... but thanks for saying that, though."

He notices how her eyes dart around. He takes a few glances himself, but figures if there was anyone, they'd have gotten enough to work with by now.
"Well, it seems true enough from where I'm standing," he answers. "But I'd rather take an honest punch to the face than a rumor behind my back."
"Which is why I'm not a courtier, I guess."

"Fair enough," she replies quickly, setting her bottle back down and retrieving her wooden sword.
"Don't suppose you have any skill with a weapon other than your fists? Though I suppose that would do if you'd like to help me train. People are better than dummies, after all... and maybe I'd like to see how honest your punches are."

"Would you prefer to take on a yari or jiujitsu?" he offers as he goes to test one of the training spears. Feel its balance. "I'd say I'm about equally trained with either."
Here's hoping I don't hurt anyone if she picks jiujitsu.

"Let's try the spear first. Better the opponent that I know. I'd like to see if my defensive capabilities have improved at all over break." Ryuha closes her eyes for a moment, seeming to focus on her inner chi. She raises her sword, opens her eyes, and focuses them on Kobushi's midsection rather intently as if to judge his first move. Interestingly enough, she does not use the two sword style her family is famous for and relies on the single bokken, two-handed. She stands, posture defensive, waiting for him to make the first move when he is ready. (OOC: TN 30 in full D, if you just wanna RP it I am fine with that. orokos.com/roll/584316)

He almost feels surprised. How long had it been since he last sparred with someone who didn't try to batter his defenses down right away? Too long, he realized, as he judged the distance. Spear ready, he makes a thrust, as much a test of her reflexes and reaction time as it is a proper attack. To his surprise, he lands a hit. It's not as strong as he'd like, but it's a start. (OOC: orokos.com/roll/584409 - attack roll, orokos.com/roll/584411 - damage roll) (Edit: Kobushi is TN 15. Forgot to include it earlier.)

Ryuha had apparently misjudged the Daidoji's reach. She tried to parry the strike from the shaft of the wooden spear at the last moment; a tactic that had nearly worked, until the tip of it slammed into her shoulder with a thud. She winces slightly from the blow, a slight look of disappointment in her eyes. She had clearly not been nearly cautious enough. "Good hit, Daidoji-san. Try again." This time, she seemed slighly more prepared. (TN 33)

"Focusing on the defensive?" he comments as he studies her form. "Ah, right. You did mention wanting to check on that." He thrusts at her, wondering if the first time was skill or luck. As it turns out, the Mirumoto's defenses are more than up to the task. If Kobushi looks disappointed at this, he doesn't show it. In fact, he seems rather amused by all this.

Ryuha looks a bit more confident after this strike from Nobushi. For this attempt she is able to parry more skillfully, her footwork correct and patient rather than hurried. She spins and slips to the side, her dark ponytail whipping against her shoulder as she does so. She replies with a nod and a small smirk, waiting to see if the Daidoji will switch up his plan of attack. (Same roll, same TN lol. 33)
