“I am much better at dueling,” he admit. “But to focus on that art alone without adapting ones swordplay as well; its kind of like fancy body work on a 2200 Firebird. Pretty to look at, but lacking in performance.”
He doesn’t seem to realize not everyone will get what he’s talking about once he starts comparing things to cars. He shrugs though, then goes over to his bag to pull out the water and his lunch box. “You thirsty? I have a spare.” He always carries around pretty much two of everything.

Ichiro furrows his brow at the comparison but then shrugs seeming to accept the analogy as accurate even if he didn't quite have the frame of reference for it. "that makes sense I likewise plan on going to some of the Iajutsu classes to try and perform better, I'd hate to become some big military hero just to get cut down in some duel with a fancy scorpion or crane." he adds the last with a wink and chuckle.
Ichiro walks over to his own stuff and pulls out a bottle of water and a bento box filled with what seems to be sushi. "Thanks man but I came prepared. I can occasionally think ahead, just not with a sword in my hand." Ichiro said with a bit of a laugh at his own joke. Ichiro sets up his stuff and offers a quick prayer to his ancestors before breaking a pair of disposable chopsticks and he tore into his meal getting two whole segments of sushi in his mouth "mro uh oo um oo ee ool" is what can be heard as Ichiro tries to ask Daidoji Satoru a question around his full mouth.

The Daidoji let out a single chuckle as he took his food and water over and sat by Ichiro. He set himself and his lunch down almost clumsily, his body beginning to sore up. He hoped the classes tomorrow wouldn’t require too much physical activity. First days are typically orientation days; lots of talk and maybe an activity to keep the students from nodding off.
“I just—well...I know it’s gonna sound like privileged whining but...eh—“ he hesitated hard on this topic. It was kind of a sensitive subject and most folks rolled their eyes at it. “Dad wants me in business. His business.” Then he shrugged. “But I’d rather...” Be a real Daidoji. He can’t bring himself to say it. To dishonor his father in such a way to an acquaintence. “I’d rather not.”
He takes up the proper etiquette in preparing his meal, giving a prayer, and in the act of eating. It’s nice to meet someone who understood the importance of being prepared. As he finished chewing a mouthful, he tried to decipher the last thing Ichiro said.
“What was that?”

Ichiro pauses and visibly forces his food down and winces a little as he does, he takes a swig of water to clear his throat. "Sorry Satoru-san, I asked why you came here to the school? what do you plan on learning and such outside of fighting obviously." Ichiro resumed eating but at a bit slower of a pace.
"Oh and don't worry man you don't have to talk about anything you don't want to." he offered what he hoped would be a reassuring smile.

"Hm, it's not that. My opinions are hardly popular," he admit, picking at the small serving of rice in his bento. "It wasn't my idea to attend Rokugan High, but the other option would have been an immediate apprenticeship in my father's company and a marriage I wasn't quite prepared for. This was Daidoji-sama's idea of a compromise. I could keep taking classes in fields that interested me, but I am required to take classes that will prepare me for his seat in the company someday."

Ichiro nodded as Satoru spoke "hm I can see that seems like the best outcome for you. Why are you avoiding the marriage? Is she not good looking? Or just like really stuck up?" Ichiro's penchant for saying the first thing that comes to his mind was showing, the questions were clearly outside the normal bounds of etiquette especially with an aquaintance whom he had just met but boundaries had never been his sort of thing.

He immediately began to choke on his last bite of rice, hand over his mouth to keep the grains from flying everywhere. A few contained coughs and a few seconds to collect his composure later, he managed to finish off that mouthful without dropping so much as a stray grain. His eyes were watery though.
Satoru tried to talk, cleared his throat, then hoarsely responded, "She's...not my type."
He hoped not to be pressed into explaining because he wasn't entirely sure of the answer to that question either, only that he didn't want to get married. She wasn't hard to look at, and she was polite, but it just felt so...awkward. How does he spend the rest of his life with someone when he feels that way?

Ichiro's brow furrowed for a moment as he processed what Daidoji Satoru was saying, then he snapped his fingers "ahhhhhhhh I totally get you man say no more" Ichiro says and gives Satoru a grin and a wink "you're into dudes right? that's cool, you won't get any judgement from me." Ichiro continued to eat his food nonchalantly totally makes sense why Satoru wouldn't want to marry if he was into guys.

Satoru covered his face, trying to hide his embarrassment. He should have known that would be the conclusion Ichiro would jump to.
His father would have pretty much killed him if he believed such a thing, but the honest truth was a little more complicated than that. The Daidoji had no idea what to do when it came to that type of relationship. He does fancy the fairer sex, but while it takes maybe a couple of meetings with an old male acquaintance for him to grow comfortable in his presence, he seems to turn to stone in the presence of women. His only real experience with them was his stepmother, and he tried to avoid her as much as he possibly could. It was a terrible experience growing up with the Doji. If she wasn’t being mean to him, she was purposefully going out of her way to make him even more uncomfortable around women.
Would it be easier for him to say he was gay? Socially no. Socially that’s suicide. But maybe that would prevent some comical attempts at trying to ship him to the nearest bachelorette. That might actually kill him. Which is worse?
“I don’t know,” was what he ended up saying, head still buried in his hand. “Women are terrifying...”

Ichiro shakes his head "yeah I used to think that too man. Women have been intimidating to me since I showed up here as a first year but it gets easier with confidence. not that my track record is so sterling......" he says as he laughs and scratches the back of his head. Ichiro lets out a deep sigh "You know sometimes I feel on top of the world a big bad third year coming back from summer like an ugly duckling turned into a swan but here waiting for it to all start.." his voice is quiet as he continues "sometimes I still feel like that duckling and like all this is just you know just an act." Ichiro pauses, its a fat pregnant pause, heavy pause full of feelings unrevealed and unspoken. Then slowly Ichiro's smile returns and he lets out a small laugh "sorry for that man probably a bit too much for someone you just met."
