"Roduregu-san, do you have the soul of a samurai?"
Isao looked to the gaijin.

Rodrigo chuckled in response.
"Well, I am a noble where I come from, but here I suppose I will have to prove myself, yes?"

"I mean a sword of a samurai, his soul, the katana."
He was deathly serious.

Rodrigo frowned. Had he just offended the boy? What did he do?
"Oh, ah, no. No, I do not."

"A samurai's soul is in his sword. His grandfather's soul before it. It carries the very essence of us, and is what marks us as samurai. When we kill with it, we kill with our soul, it cuts deeper than steel"
She shakes her head a little "Iaijutsu requires the soul of a samurai"

Rodrigo's friendly expression turned into a scowl.
"Arrogantes hijos de putas. Because I don't have a fancy sword I can't learn? You took away mine when I got here, it's just as much a symbol of office as yours!"

"I cannot teach you the art of iaijutsu until you have earned the soul of a samurai, Roduregu-san. It is not merely some game or pastime; it is an art - our life, our culture, our tradition, and eventually our death. The way of the samurai."

"I have not touched your sword, Rodrigo-san. And like you, I am not allowed to draw mine here. I said nothing about being allowed. I spoke of your ability to do so without the proper equipment. If you come to Iaijutsu classes, then I am sure that the sensei will be able to teach you far more ably than I would. My advice though, would be to master your temper. Iaijutsu requires patience and face. You are showing that you lack both"

Rodrigo sighed.
"Fine then. There are practice swords here. Maybe I can teach you how we duel in Merenae."
He took off one of his gloves and dropped it on the floor. ...wait, would a Rokugani even understand what that meant?

Deadpan. He was no longer smiling anymore.
"...you dropped your gloves, Roduregu-san."
