A character who wants to spread a rumor in character uses Courtier with the Gossip Emphasis and Awareness trait. This can be more difficult depending upon the target's Glory, with a TN of 10 plus the target's Glory x 5, minus your Glory x 5. You may make raises to conceal that you are the one spreading the gossip, or make the rumor more difficult to dispel.
To find out who is spreading a rumor, you must make a contested Investigation/Intelligence versus the result of the person who spread the rumor. In order to find out the rumor's source if he or she called raises, you must call an equal number of raises on the contested roll that go towards unraveling the source's identity. Anyone may make this roll about any rumor - perhaps one of the benefits of having a good investigator as an ally.
Example: Bayushi Yoshikatsu is trying to spread a rumor about Kuni Hinata. They both have Glory 1. Thus, the TN to spread a rumor about Hinata is 10. He chooses to make 3 raises on his roll, and has Void 3 so he may do so. He rolls a 31, and thus succeeds at the TN 25 with the raises. Kuni Hinata must call 3 raises on her Investigation/Intelligence roll to discover the source of the rumors. Unfortunately, she only has a Void 2 so it will be impossible for her to discover the source of these untruths on her own.
If a roll is failed, the GMs will come up with a way in which the rumor has not been communicated as intended - it may not catch on, parts of it could be distorted as it travels across campus, or the identity of the gossiper may be leaked. We will let you know the nature of the failure after you PM us the roll and the rumor. Please PM the roll and the rumor to all 3 GMs when submitting a rumor your PC spreads IC (you do not have to PM all 3 of us for the silly ones we come up with in chat).
If you want to target the goofy rumors we come up with out of character, you can get them removed with a successful opposed Etiquette (Conversation)/Awareness check with a TN of 10 plus your Glory x 5, minus 5. Basically, assume the NPC students who have spread them have a Glory of 1 and have made no raises to make it harder to dispel.
The same rules for dispelling a rumor spread by a PC IC will apply for dispelling rumors, just substitute Investigation/Intelligence with Etiquette (Conversation)/Awareness. Raises must also match the number of raises the player character called in regards to keeping the rumor alive.
