She shakes her head at the compliment. "I did my Duty, the same as any other samurai of the time. The same as you no doubt would, if the same chance happened."
Then he bends down. It's a shock to her, this course of action. This display of respect. She was no different from any other samurai, from any other veteran of the Onyx War. Still, if he could accept that her skills and her body weren't at their best, she was willing to help.
"On your feet, Kakita-san. I'm not some figure to be revered," she insists. "Years of neglect have taken their toll and I'm not what I was in my prime, but I still remember a thing or two. If you intend to spar, I will do my best to keep up."

"Really?!"
It was as if she had made his day. He grinned broadly at her, pleased as punch. He unzipped his bag and asked, "Bokken or shinai...? Because I'd prefer shinai. My hands and arms are a little sore and I'd rather not whack them too hard while sparring," he chattered excitedly.

"Shinai is fine, Kakita-san."
She smiles at him. Such an earnest young man, she thinks as she returns the bokken and picks up a shinai in its place. She positions herself a suitable distance away, hoping her body still remembers enough not to completely disappoint the Crane.
After a few test strikes, she enters a typical stance. "Ready when you are."

Isao offered the sensei a curt nod and adopted a water stance, his shinai held two-handed before himself which presented him ample opportunity to both attack and defend. OOC: Initiative 28

When Hisui said she had let her skills lapse, she wasn't joking. Isao was likely faster, though not by too wide a margin. The first move was his, and the old Battle Maiden conceded that point even as she readied herself for what was to come. OOC: Initiative 21, her TN is 20

He was a Crane. He was fast. Moreso he was a Kakita. Though he wasn't as others. The young swordsman darted aside and lifted his shinai up into a quick strike, the tight bamboo rod brought down lightly against her shoulder. As quickly as he had struck he moved his shinai into a position to defend, stepping aside as he maintain the fluid grace of water. OOC: Armor TN 20

The Utaku is rusty, but not useless. The sensei strikes with a display of speed that would be average for a woman of her age. She recognizes that he pulled back his force, with such a light tap against her defenses. That suited Hisui just fine. A spar to measure technique was more suited to someone in her condition. Her attack is true, returning the tap on his shoulder. Fast, this one. Faster than I was when I was his age. She smiles, but her eyes suggest she is evaluating the Crane's movements. Assessing for any weakness or area to improve. OOC: TN 20

Isao is in remarkably fine form. While he is unable to defend himself properly against her counter, he stepped back as he threw up his defense then lunged, the tip of his shinai pressing firmly against her abdomen. Like before, he didn't have any force behind the blow as he demonstrated control over the sword. All the while his cerulean eyes behind a set of glasses watched her carefully, slightly smile as he enjoyed the spar.

Hisui seems to enjoy this as well. It's been too long. But she's always enjoyed a good spar, especially against opponents that could keep her on her toes without crushing her effortlessly. Her next attack also connects, the shinai lightly touching against his collarbone. She begins to get an idea of the Kakita's capabilities, compares it to the things she's seen and the foes she's faced.

The Crane was on fire, constantly on the move with swordwork that was clearly representative of quality skill. Isao was a recent graduate of the Kakita Academy, considered the best the school had to offer last year. If she had known that, it would have been clear why he was performing so well. The collarbone strike was met with a nod and he smiled, spinning the shinai in hand to deliver a quick strike that came from her left, tapping her hip.
