Aiko notes the comment, but doesn't seem to mind it overly much, instead going through the class, "Now, there are several things to keep in mind when you are trying to figure out the nature of something hidden. For example, the person you are pushing to find out something from may be trying to find out things from you in turn, which means direct questions can give them as much information as it does you. Second. Someone may not actually have the information that you assume they do, or they have been deliberately misinformed. In that case, you will end up with information the other party believes to be true, but is actually false. Can anyone tell me why someone might receive deliberate misinformation?"

Nade glances around for a second before raising her hand.
"Going for the worst case scenario off the bat but to find out if they're a traitor perhaps? If you give them the wrong information and that information ends up in enemy hands then you know they leaked it, or were turned, or something else."

"One possibility. Of course, treason is rarely the reason to give out false information, especially because courtiers love to gos...I mean share interesting stories about other samurai with each other, so you can never be completely certain how that information got back to the other side without directly witnessing the exchange. What are some others?"

"Maybe someone is trying to hide something that isn't illegal but may still be shameful." Noboru sighed a little, seeming a bit more melancholy than usual for reasons Aiko was well aware of, "Such as disloyalty to a spouse or loved one..."

"Another possibility," Aiko replies, "And it leads to another possibility as well. As I've already mentioned, courtiers love to share stories about interesting people. Sometimes, those stories are misheard and not entirely true. They may genuinely believe that Doji Ichiro and Kakita Ichiko may be having an affair, when no such affair exists."

"Deliberate misinformation might be the result of... someone trying to spare someone else's feelings with a lie?" Yoshi offers as his answer to Aiko's question.

"Of course. Or it might be an attempt to cause someone else discomfort."

"There is also plausible deniability. If by making someone unaware of the reality of something, and then having that pass on to others, it would allow such an individual to convey only the truth of what they know. It also means that they aren't possibly caught up in whatever is truly happening," Tsuki chimed in.
