"A Shiba is born to protect. That is our duty, as it always has been. Being easier to break than my charges would make that a bit complicated to do in the traditional sense. So I had to learn. One does not need to be a bushi to protect their family and friends. A well thought strategy can save as many lives as a yojimbo. Or at least that is what I have read." Bai loosens his grip, his voice steady, as if repeating a report he had prepared and practiced far too many times. He smiles at Hisui. "Indeed, I do also enjoy tactical games, so there is that."

She nods.
"I did too, when I was younger. Then the hobby got a little too expensive and a little too time-intensive, so I had to give it up," she answers, sounding just a little like she misses the old days. "My daughter thinks like you do, in a way. The faster you secure your objectives and end a conflict, the more lives are spared. At least, if you're doing it right. And a good tactician is vital on the battlefield, speaking from experience."
"Which area is your focus, then? Boots on the ground? In the tents? Perhaps overseeing entire campaigns?" she asks, a little curious now. "All require different skills. Though, given your claims of being easy to break, I imagine boots on the ground isn't where you want to be."

"Indeed. While I expect the experience would be enlightening, I expect it may also prove fatal. A command tent would likely be ideal, although I would not shy away from a more abstract level of command if it is what is required of me." Bai scratches his chin, before realizing he has taken a hand off the saddle and quickly remedying the error. "Does your daughter go to school here?" He tilts his head, his turn to be curious.

She nods. "Practical choices, though from experience? I'd advise learning some manner of weapon. The command tent isn't always safe, especially on a modern battlefield. Even less so in urban combat."
When Bai asks about her daughter, she smiles with pride. Perhaps not intending to. "No, she's back in Shiro Utaku Shojo. She and I both decided it might be better for her development to study outside her mother's shadow," she explains. "I imagine she'd transfer here if I ever decide to stop teaching. If only to continue her rivalry with Joo-Eun-san."

Bai nods. "That is a fair point. Indeed, it is a common strategy to send a strike force after command. Perhaps it might be wise to learn some form of self defense, or at least escape techniques." He lets out a tired sigh. "That is going to be a lot of work indeed."

"Perhaps some manner of ranged weapon?" she suggests. "Archery requires strong chest muscles, though. Something thrown or mechanically assisted might be suitable. Or rocks."

"Those are good options. I suppose I shall have to see what classes they have available here, and that do not conflict with my more important classes, and just try things out. Although..." he looks down at Sakura, and chuckles "if I prove to be skilled enough at horsemanship, I could simply learn how to ride away faster than they can catch me. One can not kill what one can not catch." He says this only half in jest.

"Also an excellent idea!" she says. "So, ready to try it without me to keep her in line? As long as you don't do anything drastic, she won't run off and break into a gallop."

Bai nods. "I think I can handle it. Indeed, this is easier than I thought it would be, if somewhat rougher than I thought."

Hisui nods, handing the reins over to Bai. She gives a few last minute instructions, mostly focused on how to keep the horse from running off. And how to make it stop. It might not be needed, though. Sakura moves along at the same speed Bai was comfortable with, moving along the track. It's perhaps a good thing Hisui didn't set up any hurdles to jump over for the course.
The Utaku keeps close by, in case something does go wrong.
