Genji seems to smirk a little as Yoshi comes into the class a little tired and definitely unprepared. Oh, well. At least the Crab made it on-time and that's just as important a start, right? He doesn't speak any more on it, letting Umeko handle that since it's her class and not his, instead choosing to study the documentation before him as if he were a diligent student.

Man, it was a real Crane-fest until the Crab walked in. Chiyo spared Utaku Genji a glance, a faint smile touching her lips. How funny--Umeko has admirers. This ought to be good. It'll be a lot more interesting than a flock of Cranes and an ill-prepared Crab.
Well, the Crab was somewhat interesting too. His behavior at the party last night piqued her attention. She is disappointed he's turned to Momiko for help, but it is what it is. She can earn another first year's undying loyalty in time. The games have only just begun. There are more ducklings in this class than she expected to see anyways.
Like Hoshiko, the bassist of Blackened Feathers. She didn't like this Doji at first, but when she told off Mochihiko well...if only she had a fan. That was hot.

The bell rang in the distance, and Umeko stood, walking over to the door and closing it. Her eyes then scanned the classroom as she smiled warmly to the students that sat, waiting. "Good morning to each of you." She started as she walked back to her desk, standing behind it. "And welcome to the Introduction to Hanakotoba, the language of flowers. During the course of this class, we will go over the many uses of flowers in communicating one's intent, as well as a more in depth look at how to combine various meaning to achieve a broader message. By the end of the year, I hope that all of you will be decipher at a glance the meaning hidden behind a bouquet, and make your own intricate messages." She paused a moment to catch her breath, calmly looking over the crowd. It was mostly what she expected, though the Crab was a surprise. She didn't think the young man would be interested in her class from the short interaction she'd had with him the night before. "Flowers have been used for centuries to communicate between people of the higher caste. It is an essential skill to any courtier, and even for bushi or shugenjas. It is wise to always assume, when offering flowers, that the recipient will either already know the meaning, or will thoroughly research them later. Not accidentally insulting someone you meant to praise is, as I am sure you will agree, rather important. Therefore, be warned that this class will contain a large portion of theory, and an even larger portion of material you will be required to learn by heart. If you were hoping to be making arrangements on day one, I will have to disappoint you. But rest assured we will get to it in time." She eyed them seriously, trying to impress upon them the importance of her words. "Now." She said, reaching for the first flower on her desk, and raising it for all to see. It was a very small, slightly drooping, white flower, held by a green stem. "Who can tell me what flower this is, and what it's meaning usually is. Feel free to reference the notes in front of you." ((OOC: The flower is a snowdrop. Students may roll any lore related to flowers/hanakotoba/plants or Artisan: Ikebana. Your TN to know the flower is 10, the TN to also know the meaning is 15. If you fail the roll (or feel your character wouldn't know) then you can look through your notes, the snowdrop is on page 3 of it.))

He wasn't sure why he was taking this class, it was certainly useful, if not in his desired wheelhouse. But there were many things that fell into that category, and one never knows when something will come in handy. Shiba Bai had slipped in quietly, as he does. No need to disturb any of the other students introducing himself. He sits down at his desk, and got his note taking tool prepared.
As the class begins, he flips through the book. He had read some of it already, of course, but he wouldn't want to rely on memory for something like this. Even when he found the picture of the plant in question, he continued checking,in case this one was simply similar, but actually something else.

Identifying flower: 4d10ro1o10k3 17Chiyo’s hand was casually raised, but her expression became unreadable. She responded, and to the surprise of anybody who was familiar with her antics before, she answered the question like a well-behaved human student. ”That appears to be a snow drop, Umeko-sensei. It carries the meaning and message of hope. What is it, I wonder, that our sensei hopes for?” Now there lies the beast, the old Bayushi setting the trap, eying the bait and her prey with keen interest.

"Um, um, um..." Momiko looked back and forth to the people on either side of her; One wanted a pen? And the other was poking her? Who did she answer first? Grabbing a literal handful of pens from her bag, she thrust them in the direction of the boy while bowing in her seat to her Clanmate, "H-Hai, that's right. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu, Doji-sama." The actual knowing of the flower didn't worry her much.

This was absolutely nothing Genji had any experience with so he started what any student permitted to take an open book or open note test would do: he began checking the documentation while letting the students answer the question.

Yoshi blinked as the Crane shoved a handful of pens in his face. gently tugging one from her grip. "thank you" he said with a bit of a smile he went on to make notes, going so far as to pull out a ruler to make sure his writing was incredibly organized on the page. Though he knew what flower she was referring to, Yoshi was more concerned with his note-taking than class participation

"Good to meet you Asahaina-san" Hoshiko said quietly, smiling happily "I'm Doji Hoshiko."
Then class started properly, and the bassist had to be quiet.
