Isao, whom had seated himself at the front of the class, stood up when his turn came.
"Kakita Isao, First Year. I believe Courtesy is the tenant of Bushido which best exemplifies who I am, Otomo-sensei," the young Crane offered with a smile. He bowed to Katsumi before he resumed sitting, his eyes wide and attentive. He had his mechanical pencil in hand and wrote down notes, listening to his peers as well as their teacher.

(OOC: Done at player request since it's my dead character that's apparently haunting her.)
As each student speaks on the nature of Bushido, Sakura would hear a soft voice whispering to her. Her tone was tender and almost reminded the girl of the cherry blossoms from which her name derives.
My, my. You really are your mother's daughter. But a class on Bushido? Really?
The voice went quiet for a moment as Isao stood and introduced himself; upon its return the little Mirumoto girl would detect a bit of sultriness to the voice.
Mmm. You know, Courtesy is a nice tenet and all, but this is all nonsense. What did Loyalty get me? I spent my life loyal to Ietsuna-kun and he married another woman. Determination. Will. Control. Those are how you get what you want in life. And while that Kakita certainly isn't Bayushi Ietsuna-kun, he could be yours if you. They all could be yours...

Otomo Katsumi folds her hands together and observers her class carefully. Yes very interesting. Now then for the real game. "So then earlier today I had another student pose me a question that I feel works quite well for a Bushido class." She rises from her chair and walks in front of her desk. "Allow me to pose you a hypothetical you are in service to a lord and you see the lord perform a heinous crime. Feel free to fill in the gaps yourself. You are honor bound to service to this lord. Though the crime is great. What is the correct answer here to ignore the crime and continue to serve the lord or do you break the service to the lord and turn him in for his crimes?"

Ah. A classic question. Ryouko raised her hand, waiting for the teacher to nod at her before speaking. "Our highest duty is to the heavens themselves, and to the emperor. Anything that threatens the sanctity of the empire is to be brought down and destroyed. I might be honor bound to serve my lord, but my highest honor is to serve the Empire. I would report the crime so he might face the will of the heavens for it. If I am to be brought down with his fall, then so be it."
It seemed a rather black and white answer, and maybe it wouldn't hold up to reality, but the question was rather lacking in details which might have allowed her a more in depth response.

The question that Katsumi poised was in direct conflict of itself. Worse, it conflicted with his own ideals. He was both compelled to answer, yet... He didn't know what the right answer was... Or was that the point altogether? Isao tightened his grip on his mechanical pencil as he looked down at his notebook. Could an honorable samurai fulfill his duty to his lord by serving a known criminal? He quietly pondered how best to answer her.

Ryoko stood, in counter to the Utaku maiden's answer. She smiled to Ryouko then looked back to Katsumi.
"Sensei, shouldn't you simply perform kanshi in protest to your lord's actions as the most loyal and honorable action to take? But doesn't the Tao also say that Honor and disgrace can surprise someone? That honor is inferior because one who wins the favor is afraid of losing it. eAnd one who loses the favor is frightened with distress?"
Who let the Togashi into Bushido class wearing an Asako mon?

Otomo Katsumi leans forward Yes I suppose that is an answer you can take. She pulls out her cellphone and taps away at it for a moment. She turns her attention to Utaku Ryouko. "A bit black and white no?" She shrugs her shoulders as she motions towards the Asako. "In both of your scenarios you would doom yourself. While true Bushido does rather enjoy this kind of self sacrifice. Allow me at this juncture to ask this to you then. How many of you would honestly be willing to sacrifice your own lives?"

Isao couldn't imagine truthfully taking someone's life. To him, that was a last resort. The prospect of taking his own life, however... He furrowed his brow, torn between matters of honor and duty, life and death. Isao's mouth quirked into a visible frown.
"I don't think I could rectify serving my lord knowing he was a known criminal," Isao said quietly. "The shame of dishonor would weigh too heavily upon my soul. However, seppuku or kanshi seems like the only honorable response to the situation. But...
"The problem is, given the difference between our stations, your death would be meaningless. What is a wasted life for a samurai? To die for nothing?"

As if answering both sensei and the Kakita at once Ryoko posits: "Doesn't the Tao say it's better to die well than to live poorly?"

"But it's not dying well; someone is throwing their life away for nothing," Isao countered the Phoenix.
