How much you can learn about people by watching them debate. She plays with her earrings as she contemplates her next move. For now observe slightly longer. I think I know the next move. Those two are the most vocally opposed to each other. They shall be my toys for the next game. For the briefest of moments a dark smile plays across Otomo Katsumi's lips

"A criminal in the eyes of Heaven, as decreed by the Emperor, is a different matter altogether," he retorted. "My father is a magistrate and no samurai is above the law. It's a matter of honor to uphold the law. So, something has to be done. What you do though... Is based on social position compared to your lord. But throwing your life away... Needlessly? That serves no one but yourself."

Sakura smiles a little sadly at the Doji, "And yet you still miss the point. I am not saying some men are above the law and we are not honor bound to enforce or follow it. But in the past, there have been cases where good and honorable samurai have followed Lords they knew to have been criminals, because they felt bound by ties of honor or duty to that lord. I am saying it is easy, here and now, to make a black and white statement, but when we go out into the world, something different sometimes happens."

"I... I don't think you two are in disagreement," Yoshi's peacekeeping nature, and the fairly free-form nature of the class thus far, compels him to interject. Still, he barely says it loud enough to be heard. "Mirumoto-san is arguing that we cannot see the bends in the river until we come to them... but Kakita-san is arguing that the river will never flow away from he ocean or up a hill. So... I think... we can all agree, can't we?" He gives the entire class a hopeful look, including the rather imposing sensei.

Arguing Bushido with them? How noble of you, Mirumoto-chan. came the voice again, slightly mocking in tone. They'll never understand true loyalty. Not like the loyalty I had for him. You're wasting your time in this class. Just as I did every time I came here as Ikoma Emiko, even though I was doing my Clan's duty.

"As myself and Akodo-san have said before, and Tamori-san pointed out." She nodded to Yoshi. "I believe we might be arguing for the same thing using different words. I have not missed your point, Mirumoto-san. I said before one can hope to know themselves enough to say how they think they would react to an event, but it is not until we are truly tested that was can know." There was a distant look in her eyes as she repeated her earlier statement.
"In any case, I believe our reactions would differ greatly depending on what the crime is. It is difficult to offer a specific answer when no specific problem is given."

Sakura figets with the knots on her sword for a moment, closing her eyes and trying to center herself. Of course, you would choose this class to critique...

Isao wrinkled his nose.
"Well, it doesn't really matter, does it? It's a hypothetical - you can't just ignore the question based on here and now versus then and there. It's easy, convenient even to say, 'Well, I don't know until the situation presents itself.' You have to discuss it based on your own ideology, and how strongly you identify to the tenants of Bushido. It's obvious, and natural even, to have different interpretations. Still, it's too easy to avoid the question..."

You know, you're the one who chose to carry my name. You're the one who carries my daisho. If you want to live up to my example...
Asako Ryoko just listened to Isao and the Utaku he'd met in kyujutsu class debate bushido with great interest, then hears Isao's question about whether or not it matters. She little Phoenix chimes in, noting, "But Kakita-san, isn't it said that every moment has a lesson for you to learn. Learn to listen? Hypothetical or not, I don't think anyone here has avoided the question."
... mmh. You and he would make such a cuuute couple, Sakura-chan. But do you really think you have a chance at someone like him by following Bushido?

"From an ideological perspective, I will say again that the right answer is as Asako-san says: kanshi, or seppuku, in protest of your lord's status as a criminal. However, it presents an obvious problem: based on the difference in station between you and your lord, it may very well mean nothing as far as testimony is concerned. However, I personally feel it's the wrong course of action as your death in protest to your lord serves nothing, and would be selfish when compared to your duty not only to your lord, but your family as well. So, I feel like we're between a rock and a hard place... And we all seem to agree, unless we're in the actual situation, how do we actually know? But I can't simply say that. It's too easy.
"Since I could not rectify serving a criminal lord... Retirement is always an option."
