The clubs Yoshi mentioned were either hits or misses for her. She might catch him at Students for Peace, which was a staple of hers since her first year. She was the one often disturbing the peace, but that was neither here nor there. If she joined again, and she so far had every intention of doing so, it would be out of curiosity in how the new Chiyo would handle it.
"I used to be in the Anime and Manga Club and I've been in Students for Peace since my first year on," she admits, trying to think of some of those she only took first year. Aside from Anime/Manga, which she skipped last year, she wasn't very consistent.
"I was...in the Matchmaker club in first year, I think. And I think that was the same year I tried the Gardening club but I dropped out of it after a week or so. Maybe Debate club? Did I get kicked out of that one...?" She muttered the last sentence, trying to remember the incident that could have lead to her never returning. Oh...yeah, she totally was. She made one girl completely inconsolable.

"I used to be in the Anime and Manga Club and I've been in Students for Peace since my first year on," she admits, trying to think of some of those she only took first year. "I'll definitely be doing that one, then," Yoshi says, mostly oblivious to the effect his eagerness was having on her. While he would notice her withdrawals and avoidance at times, he didn't correlate them to his enthusiasm for spending time with her, and therefore continued to show it, thinking he was complimenting and encouraging her by doing so. "I was...in the Matchmaker club in first year, I think. And I think that was the same year I tried the Gardening club but I dropped out of it after a week or so. Maybe Debate club? Did I get kicked out of that one...?" "You did say you weren't nice, like you are now, in your first years," Yoshi recalls quietly, his Kitsuki training helping him deduce why she might have been kicked out of Debate Club. Yoshi thinks for a moment before asking her, "Do you... ever wonder why you were like that? And... do you know what it was that made you decide to be different this year?"

What kind of...question was that? Why was she mean? Why'd she decide to stop? Couldn't he have just accepted that she left those days behind her? She knew why she decided to make the change, but she would always be too proud to admit the truth. As for why she was like that in the first place? Chiyo had her suspicions, but if she was correct as she feared herself to be, it would be a massive admittance of weakness. As a Scorpion, she was practically cursed to take that shit to the grave with her. "I guess I was too good at what I did," she ends up saying. "I was good at breaking others, and I got in over my head and failed my final year because I didn't think I needed to study or do any real work. This year, I aspire to focus on my studies rather than engage in those spiteful activities. There's a time and a place for pens and swords. That was a lesson I had to learn the hard way." "I'm sorry to have brought up unpleasant memories, Bayushi-sama," Yoshi apologizes, having no clue she was hiding anything. His voice is fraught with compassion, not having known until now that she'd failed and was retaking her Third Year. So, he had gotten some new truth out of her, even if it wasn't a secret, and his warm smile showed that appreciated what he thought was her candor. "I often wish that I was... different than I am," he admits to her, repaying what he believed was honesty with his own, "and... I thought I might learn from you how to make a change for the better." Again, he gives Chiyo a look of admiration, meant to encourage her along her path to being a better person.

"Don't worry about it," she quickly waved it off. "The important part is what happens in the past stays there. Or...it may come back to haunt me, but at least I'll know what's coming to me."
She had no idea how bad it could end up getting. As it was, she already felt like she was on the radar to the point where any casual conversation almost felt like an attack. Not with Yoshi, though. He didn't seem like the deepest lake in the valley, but she could be wrong. She was often wrong about a lot of things, but it didn't change the fact that he was easier to talk to than anybody she's come across so far. Up until he got extra clingy that...that was something she was not taking to very well.
He wants to aspire to be like me; he has no idea what he's asking.
"Just aspire to be a better you," Chiyo says, as if it's almost too obvious. "What's so wrong with this Yoshi, anyhow?"

"Don't worry about it," she quickly waved it off. "The important part is what happens in the past stays there. Or...it may come back to haunt me, but at least I'll know what's coming to me." "If I hear anyone talking about the old you, I'll be sure to set them straight," Yoshi tells her. Blushing a little, he adds, "I heard your name in a couple of rumors..." (along with his own name) "...but such things are... not verifiable testimony, without first-hand accounting or corroborating physical circumstance; at best irrelevant, at worst, misleading." He did sometimes tend to find inspiration by quoting from his old Kitsuki text books. "Just aspire to be a better you," Chiyo says, as if it's almost too obvious. "What's so wrong with this Yoshi, anyhow?" "There's nothing wrong with him," Yoshi says, sighing. Quietly, he adds, "There's just nothing right with him either."

Chiyo didn’t want to laugh, but she very nearly ended up doing so. Amusement did cross her features, but it could have easily been mistaken for relief that somebody would take her side. Tamori Yoshi? Defending me? She could only imagine how that would go. He is definitely smitten with her, but she can’t picture this kid standing up to a second or third year speaking mad truths about how much of a bitch she had been in the past. And still is, really.
The mention of the rumors did cut the amusement short however. “Rumors are a staple here, cancerous as they are,” she mentions in that regard. “Every one of them carries some grain of truth, but unless one is wise enough to pick it out, they are likely going to buy into a lot of garbage.”
She remembered what she told the Prince earlier, about how people were their own worst judge of character. It felt wrong to reuse that line with Yoshi. She couldn’t think of any compliments that weren’t kind of an insult. Luckily the bus was just getting to their stop, so she didn’t have to respond with something pretentious.
“We’ll see about that—come on, this is our stop,” Chiyo says, holding onto the seat in front of her to get to stand.

"We... will?" he asks, mind racing as it tries to consider the possibilties of what this seemingly kind and definitely beautful girl might do to discover something worthwhile inside him. He was more than willing to let her take the lead.

She smiled at him and gave a short, curt nod. "Mhm!" Chiyo hoped that wasn't too much but it seemed like such a minor gesture--surely it couldn't have been.
The Bayushi lead them down a block or so to a small restaurant that appeared to be overwhelmed by signage from the adjacent competitors. It was a very modest enclosure that smelled of fried fish and vegetables. The staff was composed of one chef cooking up a storm on a hot flat-top, the sizzling surface covered in a scattered assortment of squid and chopped peppers. Some corn tortillas...or not quite tortillas, they were being set aside on a plate to cool and press. The 'pockets' Chiyo spoke of were definitely foreign in concept. They looked like pastries, but instead of sweet, they were all savory.
There were a few tables, none of them occupied. The chef seemed to be too busy to notice them yet. He must be filling an order for someone who's coming to pick up later.
Chiyo chooses a table nearest to the front counter and picks up a menu, passing it to Yoshi. "They don't mix the meats and the vegetables on the same grill. If you're trying to keep it traditional, I mean."

"I'm not too picky about what I eat," Yoshi tells her, scanning the menu. He remembers his extravagant purchase the day before, and continues more quietly, "As long as it's... not too expensive... and healthy, of course. I don't think it's good to have too much... sugar." He winces as he remembers Chiyo's lunch tray piled high with sweets, then gives her a look of apology, hoping she hadn't taken offense.
He easily picks the lowest priced item at once, but continues to appear as if he is perusing the menu to hide the fact he's trying to think of something to say. He wanted to ask Chiyo how she planned for them to see something "right" about him over the course of dinner. It also made him wonder why she'd taken such a keen interest in him in the first place. He wasn't even sure if what they were doing might be a date or not. However, having noticed her pull away from deep questions like this on the bus ride, he instead settles on a topic that he deems fairly safe.
"So... what's the Prince like?" he asks.
