That’s...interesting. Tarik and Otomo Katsumi? What could that be all about? Well, it may have to do with the party. He did help host the one at Mako’s. Yeah, but that’s boring. She can probably put a better spin on something so trivial.
“Tarik-san did help Mako-chan set up the party a couple of days ago. Perhaps word got to Otomo-sensei,” she reflected aloud.
“I appreciate it, I really do,” she says in response to Yoshi’s efforts. “I’m glad you’ve been making many friends. You’re a sweet one, Yoshi-san. See? Now I am aspiring to be more like you.”

"I don't mind taking notes at all...," Yoshi says to Chiyo's theory, "...but I hope she was making him miss class for something more important than party-planning." After receiving her gratitude and compliment, his smile grows.
"Thank you, Bayushi-sama," he replies, "but... being nice isn't anything special about me; it's simply how one should be." He bites his lip after the words come out, hoping he hasn't inadvertently paid her past self an insult.

Fortunately, Chiyo didn't take it that way. She's definitely had far worse flung her way, and this barely seemed to qualify as it was not an insult made intentionally. He was behaving well. He wasn't challenging her or questioning her anymore. Soon this dinner would be done with and they can part with a--
Nope, it's not that kind of dinner, she reminds herself. Did she really have to? This kid is nice and all, but come on. Look at him! Why...why would she even entertain the idea of dating him?
Honestly he was...cute, in a sort of pathetic way. But sincere. She didn't have to worry about him the way she worried about Mochihiko, or Yoshinobu, or practically anybody else for that matter.
"You...would be surprised how many people don't see the value in that." Herself included. It was a weakness to be exploited, not a strength to be wielded. Then again, if you attract enough allies and friends to your light, kindness can become a means to an end. That was her little experiment, after all.

"I... guess I wouldn't be all that surprised," Yoshi tells her, his face falling as he recalls all the countless failed attempts at making friends before coming to RHS. He take his final bite and chews in melancholy thoughtfulness, but then looks over the Chiyo and his expression brightens once more.
"I'm glad you do, though," he tells her, not knowing a word of her internal monologue. In his mind, that was at least one good thing she saw in him, even if he didn't think it was that remarkable himself. After considering this for a time, he resolves aloud, "You know what...? I think I'll try to see myself more the way you do, as someone who has value just because they're nice. I hope... sometime... you can do the same; see yourself how I do." He looks at the beautiful, kind woman he sees beside him and gives her an optimistic smile.

What does that even look like? She can barely imagine it. The closest thing she can come up with is the protagonist of this one series she read about a sweet Doji woman who finds love with a brutish young Hida. She was very patient and kind, able to soothe the worries and doubts in her brooding lover. That and yes, of course, pages of hot action--but if you set that all aside the fourty-odd pages of their courtship, maybe there's a vague idea of what she must have looked like to Yoshi here.
The crab pocket was a goner by now. The portions here were fair for healthy eating, and the prices were right. So far this dinner went well. A pothole here and there, sure, but smooth cruising on.
"You know..." she eventually breaks the silence that drifted between them while she finished her food. "This has actually been pretty pleasant."

"I've enjoyed our time together too, Bayushi-sama," Yoshi tells her, again trying to reassure Chiyo of her own worth. He didn't take personally the apparent surprise in her statement about having a pleasant time, rather thinking that it was actually an indictment of herself, and that she had been sure she would ruin things by slipping into her old habits.
"I think the rain's starting to let up... a little," he adds, hopeful for a slightly less uncomfortable trip back to his dorm as he looks out the restaurant windows to the soaked city streets beyond.

"Hai, we should probably go and try to beat it back to the dorms," she says with a fire in her eyes. A golden opportunity to wrap up the 'date?' if there ever was one. "I'll pick up the tab. Grab napkins from the bathroom!"
Chiyo was suddenly quite lively now that the light was shining at the end of this dank, dark tunnel. No more having to worry about prying questions; from here on out she'll try to keep conversation steered towards the trivial. He kept getting way too close for comfort on matters that she normally kept at a great length. As promised, she did get up to pay for their meal, without asking Yoshi if he wanted to contribute anything. She wasn't rich, but it's not like the Dragon ran a massive tab.

"Thank you so much, Bayushi-sama!" Yoshi says, bowing to her after hopping out of his seat at her orders to go grab napkins. He was relieved that he wouldn't have to spend anything out of his nearly-gutted bank account, but also that in anticipation of doing so, he'd ordered the absolute cheapest thing on the menu, so it wouldn't be a burden to her.
"I got... a lot," he admits when he returns from the task, his zipped-up jacket pockets bulging. He approaches the door and opens it, letting in both the cold and the fortunately abating sound of raindrops on pavement. Seeing the bus stop a block up the street, he reaches out behind him for Chiyo's hand.
"Ready to make another dash for it?" he asks her with a smile, preparing to take the lead this time.

The energy that started with her and seemed to amplify in him had this contagious effect on her. Okay, he did grab a comical amount of napkins. She couldn't help but chuckle at that. "You're going to be well insulated," she joked. "But you won't be soaked to the bone again."
The cool air hit the two of them when the door was opened for her, and when he offered his hand to take the lead, Chiyo took it before she even realized it.
"Let's go!"
And forgetting that they even had her umbrella, which hung uselessly on her arm, they darted through the rain. All the while she smiled, a light laughter like a little girl playing in the rain.
