Umeko smiled gratefully at Kengei, glad that he had changed the subject. She agreed with the crane that that specific subject was hardly appropriate for lunch over tea, especially on their first day.
"I absolutely love tending the gardens and taking care of the grounds here. It's very busy work, but I find it incredibly relaxing. Teaching has been... Interesting. I have met students with whom I've build good relations and when ever I can find someone that had little knowledge but incredible motivation to learn, then it is a delight. That isn't always the case however. Sometimes they take the class out of obligation, and you can sense they barely care for the subject." She shook her head, clearly a little annoyed at the thought. "Overall I would say it is rewarding, but there are days I am very tempted to go see the principal and ask him to remove me from any teaching position."
She said the last bit with a smile, softening the intent of her words.

Kangei nodded as he listened politely to Umeko, his blue grey eyes fixed on hers as she spoke. He smiled at her ending statement. "Yes I suppose dealing with kids this age can be a challenging pursuit. They are right on the cusp of independence, of adult hood. Still trying to make their parents happy but interested in forging their own path. It's why I got into this business, I want to give them the tools they will need to be successful. All walks of life benefit from etiquette from Lion generals to Otomo heralds, to varying degrees to be sure but they all benefit in one way or another. I expected it to be incredibly difficult yet fulfilling work." Kangei nods at Umeko "Thank you for confirming that for me."
He shoots Umeko a sly grin revealing his straight white teeth "though I pray you only jest in your desire to quit teaching, we need more people in this world capable of creating such excellent produce as you Umeko-chan"

She chuckled, shrugging slightly. "Mostly. While I don't see myself quitting in the near future, this is only something I am doing while I set other plans in motion. I don't think I will still be teaching here in 4 years, unfortunately." She took a sip of her tea, before glancing back at him.
"And what about you, Asahina-sama? Would it be improper for me to ask what you did before you decided to try your hands at teaching?"

Kangei's pleasant air falters for a moment a slight frown touching his lips for the first time in their exchange. "It is not offensive and a fair question considering my own inquiries." He pauses a bit "but as we said before tea is not a time to speak of unpleasant things, perhaps another time Umeko-san." He gives her an apologetic smile "please don't think I'm not aware of the unfairness of my answer considering your candor, I beg your understanding but my past is not something I enjoy talking of to a great degree. Suffice it to say I worked in the courts for many years before coming to the school. Some..... unpleasantness made me leave the court to come teach."

She bowed her head in acknowledgement. "Of course. Far from me to want to bring back a sore subject." Silence settled between them for a moment as Umeko glanced toward Genji and the Scorpion, noting her friend's slightly exasperated but curious look. She was too far to hear what they were saying, as the scorpion had picked the furthest table from them but she couldn't help the amused smile that flickered on her lips at the look on Genji's face.
Her eyes settled back on the Crane. "Have you attended this school in the past, Crane-sama? It seems quite a few of our new teachers this year are returnees."

The crane's smile returned as if it had never left. "No I trained at a local school for my education and the rest I got through experience. I negotiated a couple of important peace talks between the crane and various minor clans. I believe that is when I drew the attention of RHS."
He paused and took another sip of his tea realizing it was empty Kangei refilled his own cup and gestured to Umeko asking of she needed more as he spoke "and what of you Umeko-chan? Are you a former student of these illustrious halls?"

She handed him her cup, shaking her head. "No, I'm afraid not. Most of my training was done in my... With my family." She took her cup back with a smile. "Would you be interested in a tour? It would set a rather bad exemple should a teacher be late to his own class because he got lost in the many corridors of the main building." The gardener said with a hint of playful teasing.

Kangei actually let out a rare chuckle at that his laugh soft and pleasant as his voice. "Why yes a tour would be lovely, This school is impressive......as are its faculty." He added the last bit with a smooth smile at Umeko. Kangei was enjoying his time with the ronin more than he had predicted, she was pleasant and easy to talk to. Not to mention she was quite easy on the eyes Kangei would catch his eyes lingering too long on her face. "in fact this has been a lovely encounter all around, I'd love to make this a more regular venture perhaps in a more intimate setting. One rarely finds that balance of good conversation with such a lovely woman." Kangei allowed himself to become a bit more forward deciding he had spent enough time with the woman for it to be acceptable to make his intentions known. [ Pathetic attempt at resisting flattery: 2d10k2 12] She blinked at him owlishly, as if she couldn't quite understand why he thought so highly of her, before laughing and nodding. "That would be lovely, Asahina-sama. Perhaps we could arrange lunch in my office? I keep most of my teas there, so you could browse them more to your heart's content."

Kangei smiles a bit more broad at her acceptance. "Sounds perfect!" He gives Umeko a a long look and adds "you know as wonderful as your teas are the most precious flower doesn't live in your greenhouse." He pauses after that and takes a long drink of tea as he thought. Perhaps that was a bit too much but who knows at least she already agreed to a meeting.
