Rodrigo shrugged with a flourish and flashed his trademark cocky grin. He probably wouldn't win, but this could at least be fun.
"Why not? Worth giving it a shot. I'm in."

Uetani is signed up for the team, and watching events unfold slowly. She frowns a little when Noboru is removed, but understands the situation for what it is.

Kobushi considers it for a moment, but eventually...well, there is no dishonor in admitting the superiority of your opponents.
"I don't think I'm ready yet to be competing for captaincy."

Rodrigo looked at Kobushi and chuckled.
"Less competition for me then, eh?"
He went to clap Kobushi on the shoulder, then remembered that Rokugani didn't like touching. Instead his hand just fell to his side awkwardly mid-swing.
"Nah, I'm just kidding. C'mon, man, it'll be fun. No shame in losing."

"But we also recognise the honour in acknowledging a superior opponent. Stepping aside when you determine you opponent to be superior with no loss of face is an important part of the iaido tradition."
she smiles to the gaijin
"Besides, there is always me to overcome"

"I never back down from a challenge. Win or lose. I gain insight." he looked to the others. "I would like to participate too." he said boldly.

Rodrigo suddenly looked confused. The Rokugani had some strange traditions but that was the weirdest one he'd heard yet.
"Why's losing have to be a loss of face? I mean sure if you're killed but in a friendly competition?"

"For what it's worth, I think you'll do better than I would, Azerora-san," Kobushi says, smiling at the gaijin. "As for loss of face, even in a competition like this, many samurai put their pride at stake. They want to prove better than others. And for some, losing even a friendly competition can be humiliating."

"I would say that there is a dignity in accepting a hard earned defeat, though it is perhaps not glorious. Acknowledging a superior is honorable, but so is standing before one in the name of something greater than yourself. There are many ways to conduct yourself in a duel, as long as one acts with honor and dignity, face will be retained."

Fuyu nods. "If you win, if you enter...you are making a commitment. If you are not ready to be captain of this club. Then do not compete for it. In signing up you are saying not only that you wish to test your skill but that your word and deed commit to the job. If so, then sign this paper." she says putting out a new paper.
(Pausing the process till GM gets back to me on how captainships are decided)
